A grand ride for the country

When I passed my driving test my parents bought me my first car, a deeply beloved 1956 Morris Minor, writes Pete from Shifnal.
My Suzuki Grand Vitara reminds me of this – it has the same chunky lines, bumpy ride and friendly, rather idiosyncratic personality.
I’ve had this car from new and although it’s far from perfect I never want to part with it – the high driving position and excellent manoeuvrability is great for the country lanes around my home.
ABS brakes and positive steering add to the driving pleasure once you’ve got used to the hard suspension.
The gears have to be worked – the 1.6 litre engine is a touch underpowered – but fuel consumption is quite good at around 34 MPG.
I like the fact that there’s a standard 5-speed box driving the front wheels for everyday use and a selectable 4 WD box for adverse conditions.
The recent snow chaos presented no problems; the car tackled Bridgnorth’s steep slippery hills without any loss of traction.
Drawbacks? Yes, a few. Very cramped in the back; difficult rear access via front doors; rear seat squabs stick up when folded flat. Cheap clock.
But overall a willing workhorse that combines all the benefits of a 4WD without the gas-guzzling disadvantages. I love it!
