It’s hats off to top headlines
Thursday 19th July 2007, 4:44PM BST.
I can be a bit flippant at times, says our News Blogger David Burrows. No, really, I can. Often when we are discussing stories in the news room, I will pipe up with some comment or other which I (but invariably no-one else) thinks is funny.
What I can’t do is turn these comments into witty or eye catching headlines. It is a skill, and one that a few of our sub editors are particularly skilled at.
Now nobody can beat the Sun when it comes to these things. Whatever else you think about the paper, its headline writers border on genius. By far their greatest ever was when lowly Inverness Caledonian Thistle knocked mighty Celtic out of the Scottish FA Cup 3-1 at Celtic Park.
The next day’s headline? “Super Cally Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious”. Stunning.
We might never reach those echelons, but some have caught my eye recently. One this week about Asda’s row over the last Harry Potter book. Our chaps came up with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Asda Ban“, which I loved.
Today’s BBC story – headlined “Bunch of Bungling Clowns” – I also liked.
I’ve had my own stab, too. A wonderful picture came in a few days ago of a particularly short child dressed as Darth Vader, pointing a finger at a full sized Storm Trooper.
Unfortunately my best pun – Half Vader – I used in the intro, so when the subs, knowing I was a Star Wars geek – then asked me for a head line suggestion I was stumped. But I thought “Star Wars – The Mini Series” wasn’t half bad (ooh look, another pun).
All in all though, I think I will leave the clever headlines to those who earn a living at it. I will content myself with making asides during news conference.
And then sit back and wait for the groans.
