Call over £2m car park deal
Thursday 19th July 2007, 10:08AM BST.
The controversial £2 million sale of Shrewsbury’s Barker Street car park should be called off because the land is worth more money, a group of borough councillors demanded today.
Members of the opposition Labour group on Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council want the authority to pull-out of the deal with Morris Property.
They also want all future sales of valuable council assets, worth more than £100,000, to be agreed by the whole authority instead of just the ruling cabinet.
The controversial sale of the car park next to Grade II listed Rowley’s House has attracted criticism as it was taken at a behind-closed doors meeting.
Members of the authority will vote on the issue at a meeting in a week’s time.
Andy Goldsmith, borough council assistant chief executive, confirmed that the deal had not yet been signed and sealed.
“The deal is still something we are working on at the moment and the exchange of contracts is due any day,” he said.
Danny Moore, Labour group leader, said he had concerns over the way the sale of the car park was handled.
“I was somewhat concerned by the manner in which thew action was taken at cabinet in an exempt period,” he said.
“My understanding was the decision was very close and decided by the leader of the council.”
