Vow to fight school plans
Saturday 14th July 2007, 5:37AM BST.
Campaigners hoping to save their village school from closure have vowed to “fight on”.
Ysgol Gynradd Carno is one of six schools threatened with the axe under a revamp of education by Powys County Council.
Education chiefs are currently going through a consultation process with each of the six schools affected and met members of the Carno community yesterday.
Bob Smith, chairman of the school governors for four years, said: “The message is, we are fighting on. Absolutely no question whatsoever – it always has been and nobody is giving up.
“I think what the meeting achieved was bringing home to the council the strength of feeling.
“Some of the most telling comments came from someone who had moved into the community five weeks ago, saying how much he appreciated the school and how his lad was getting on with learning Welsh.
“We are looking at the legality of the way the council is going about things. A lot of people are not happy about the way the decision is being taken.
“We are also collecting a petition for the Welsh Assembly Government.”
The other schools affected by the proposals – Llanfihangel Church in Wales School, Ysgol Efyrnwy, Llangurig County Primary School, Howey Church in Wales School and Ysgol Thomas Stephens – are also going through the same consultation process which is due to end on August 23.
On Monday, people in Llangurig met with education chiefs, but Ernie Jones, the primary school’s headteacher, said parents were resigned to losing the school.
However, Mr Smith said: “There’s absolutely no sense of resignation here.
“We have always been determined – of the six schools we probably have the best chance of not going down when the board meets, if only because our numbers are actually rising.
“We have 25 pupils now and have been around the community asking parents which school their children would go to.
“It is hoped with the changes in Cardiff there will be a change of heart.”
