Right direction for Cornes

Play-off hero Chris Cornes insists his switch to AFC Telford United has finally enabled him to get his head straight after losing his way at Wolves and Worcester.

The 20-year-old became an instant favourite for the Telford faithful with a stunning goal in the 3-1 play-off final victory over Witton that secured promotion to the Blue Square North.

But his recent past has included a six-month ban for failing a drug test at Wolves and his subsequent sacking at Molineux for missing mandatory rehabilitation sessions.

A switch to Worcester failed to do the trick, with Cornes admitting his hunger for the game had evaporated during that difficult period.

But a loan move to the Bucks, which he has now made permanent on a one-year contract, has seen him steer his career back on the straight and narrow.

“Leaving Wolves as I did there was a lot of attention and that got on my mind,” he said.

“This is a fresh chance for me and I would really like to grab it with both hands.

“You look at Michael Kightly at Wolves and how well he’s doing (after a move from Grays), and I don’t see why you couldn’t do that from a league lower down.”

Cornes had interest from League clubs over the summer, with Rotherham and Shrewsbury offering trials and Chester also making inquiries.
