Recycling plant hit by blaze

Twenty-five firefighters from four counties were called to a major blaze in Powys.
Five crews from Powys, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire were called to a recycling plant at Knighton yesterday.
They went to Bromfield Industrial Services, in Ludlow Road, Knighton, at 9.50pm.
The plant recycles metals from fridges and other items and a blaze damaged one of its crushers.
People living nearby were advised to stay back amid fears some of the waste parts alight in the crusher could give off toxic fumes.
Today Bromfield Industrial Services managing director Robert Sant said: “We are still not 100 per cent sure where it started.
“We think it was something to do with one of the forklift trucks. It sounds like one of them might have a problem and one of the crushing machines is damaged as well.
“One of the things we ensure we have is excellent preventative measures. It created a lot of smoke and not much else.”
Eyewitness Jane Bywater said: “Members of the public were kept well back by the police because of the risk of toxic fumes.
“Luckily the wind was taking the smoke away from the town. There was lots of smoke but I didn’t see any flames.”
Mid and West Wales Fire Service said no-one was injured and the cause was being investigated.
