Inquest told death ‘accidental’

A Shropshire women died because of complications after a routine operation on her shoulder, an inquest heard.

Joyce Davies, 68, of Greenfields Road, Craven Arms, was admitted to the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Gobowen, on March 19 and released on March 21 but two days later she had deteriorated and was admitted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where she died.

Deputy Coroner for Mid and North Shropshire Mr Patrick Gittins recorded a verdict of accidental death, which was a consequence of a reasonable procedure to perform.

Pathologist Dr Eric Nicholls told the inquest held yesterday at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court that the case was very unusual.

He said she died of ischaemic colitis, which means there was a lack of blood supply to her large intestine caused by low blood pressure as a result of the original operation.
