Business Oscars get 007 style

Saturday 23rd June 2007, 6:01PM BST.

awardsdinner.jpgHundreds of people were shaken, stirred and royally entertained as the James Bond-themed Shropshire business “Oscars” party spilled over into the early hours.

The seventh annual black-tie county business awards gala, organised jointly by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and the Shropshire Star at Telford’s International Centre, last night attracted the largest audience yet.

Salop Leisure, the mobile holiday home company from Shrewsbury, was the night’s big winner.

The firm, which has just been at the centre of a management buyout, was crowned Shropshire Company of the Year. Matt Sandford of Pure Communications in Dorrington was also celebrating after picking up two awards.

He claimed the best new business, and entrepreneur of the year.

Other winners included Protomold of Hortonwood, Alcoa of Stafford Park, Barbers Property Agents of Shrewsbury, Skillbuilders from Ludlow, and The Jackloc Company of Priorslee.

The 500-plus members of the audience were also invited to become Dragon’s Den-style judges for the evening by voting for the winner of the Star Idea competition.

Three local inventors presented their plans in the hope of winning a prize package worth £6,500 to turn the dream into reality, and the winner was Lisa Pickering of Hadley in Telford who has developed bio-degradable “growing” greetings cards which turn into flowers or shrubs when planted.

The evening was given a James Bond theme to mark the 45th anniversary of both Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, and the 007 film series.

business.jpgOne of the star attractions was a gadget-laden Jaguar XKR which featured in the Bond movie Die Another Day.

There was also a raffle to win hundreds of pounds of rare film memorabilia, including genuine casino chips which were used during shooting of another 007 adventure, Licence To Kill.

Shropshire Chamber of Commerce launched its new patronage scheme, unveiling Geoffrey Davies of Ludlow-based McConnel as its first patron, and outlined plans for a £500,000 revamp of its headquarters in Telford. Chamber president Tony Randall said: “In a changing business climate, Shropshire businesses have displayed resilience and commitment to their goals.”

He said the awards had shown Shropshire to be a “vibrant county which is full of potential”.

Awards master of ceremonies Carl Jones, assistant editor of the Shropshire Star, said: “This is the seventh year of the county business awards, and is by far the biggest yet. Judges toured all corners of the county meeting the shortlisted finalists – they’ve covered a combined distance this year of nearly 1,000 miles.”

Is it any wonder this country is in such a mess when botanical inovation can outvote technical wizardry. I refere to the geeting card with seeds and Tony Smith’s lap top stand. Once this country led the world in technology but sadly no longer. Is tony’s idea yet another one that has to go overseas to prove it’s worth? Nobody wanted Dyson, now just about every vacuum cleaner uses his principal. I wish Lisa well and hope she succedes. However I cannot help but feel despair for the lack of forsight in the judge’s decision over the lap top stand.

I would like to oint out that it was the whole room that participated in the voting, not just a handful of judges. The laptop stand is such a fantastic idea, I am sure that company that designed it will have no problem with future developing it further and making a huge success of it. Lisa’s, less technical yes, but no less worthy.

I think that all of the above comments are valid but we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that it was an evening to celebrate Shropshire’s business success and what a fantastic evening it was. I personally voted for the seed invention which I thought was a great idea which I’m sure will turn into a roaring success. Competition is a key element of business and without it progress would be much slower.

I think the event was run exceptionally well and am looking forward to next year.

I would just like to say “Congratulations” to Lisa Pickering, her idea was by far the best, and she gave an excellent presentation. She really deserved the prize- with an original and innovative business idea, she was a clear winner from the start. Well done lisa.

Well done Lisa Pickering but I have seen the same sort of idea available in Charlies of Shrewsbury & on the internet from America so not so original in the end but should help with the enviroment. As for the Laptop stand an absolutely ingenius invention so best of luck getting that off the ground and into production – cant wait to get one for my childrens laptop.

I was reading tonight’s paper and noticed that Lisa Pickering won an award for the Seed Cards, I was very surprised to read this as these are worldwide available, just go into google and enter ‘seed card’

I am thoroughly pleased for Lisa Pickering, her idea is great and I would definitely buy them myself. Her determination and enthusiasm shines through, and I know she will make a great success of it! It is sad to read Jim’s comments. Growing Greetings is a fantastic product! As for ‘the lack of foresight’ by the judges, I suggest this is simply your own ignorance. Lisa won due to the overwhelming votes received for her product. Thank goodness the decision wasn’t down to you! It is impossible to please everyone, and you are an shining example of that. However, as long as innovation and invention continues, we can look forward to more diverse and interesting products in the market; which can only be a good thing! Well done to everyone, your determination is admirable.

The competition is as much about recognising potential business ideas as it is new inventions. Go google some of the other entries.

2 years ago when this idea was firest started a google search would have returned no results.
