Melverley
Friday 22nd June 2007, 9:36AM BST.
Distance: Three miles.
1. Start at the lay-by at the eastern end of the bridge over the River Severn, between Crew Green and Melverley. Cross the road to a stile leading into a field.
This bears a logo for the Severn Way, a route of 211 miles which follows the river from source to the sea. It enters Shropshire at this point.
2. Following the waymarks, bear right along the top of a drainage dyke and go ahead over several stiles towards arm buildings.
3. On reaching the hedged boundary to the farm, follow this round to the right and then turn right onto a track and out onto a lane. To your left is the church of St Peter.
4. Continue down the lane to a road junction by the Tontine pub. Turn right and follow the lane out of the village to another junction, where there is a footpath sign on the left.
5. Cross the stile and go slightly right across the field to a stile in the far boundary. Cross and cut across the next field to another stile in the right-hand corner.
6. Walk diagonally across the next field to a gate and through to a farm track. Bear half-left to a stile next to a “No Parking” sign and bear half-right across the next field to a stile hidden in a kink in the far boundary.
7. Cross and go ahead in the next field until rejoining the dyke. Turn right along this and follow it over several stiles, with the River Severn on your left, back to the river bridge, where there is a stile leading back up to the road.
