Weller ready to jam at venue
Thursday 21st June 2007, 11:45AM BST.
Music legend Paul Weller will be playing to a sell-out crowd of around 5,000 people tonight when he returns to Telford’s International Centre. The former frontman of The Jam and The Style Council was the first big-name to play a concert at the Shropshire venue when he appeared for the first time in the county in July, 2005.
Ttonight he will keep the promise he made to those fans two years ago when he praised the county venue and said: “We’d never even heard of this place – but Telford rocks. We’ll have to come back here.”
It is one of just three confirmed concerts for the veteran rocker this year, and his only gig in the Midlands.
The event is also going to be a big night for Brinkman, the up-and-coming rock group supporting Weller during his sell-out show, who described it as the biggest gig of their lives.
Singer-songwriter Paul Cook said: “We’re really looking forward to playing in Telford for the first time and hope all our Shropshire fans come out to show support.”
Weller, 48, who had four number one singles with The Jam including Going Underground and A Town Called Malice, and six multi-platinum albums, is using tonight’s Telford concert as a warm-up for his appearance at this weekend’s Glastonbury festival, where he will join a star-studded line-up of more than 200 acts.
His arrival further cements The International Centre’s reputation as an up and coming regional concert venue.
