College bans smoking outside

Shrewsbury College will outlaw smoking anywhere on its premises when the ban comes into force on July 1, it announced today.It means more than 10,000 students, staff and visitors will not be allowed to light up anywhere in the grounds, including on car parks and in parked cars.
The tough new policy will apply to to the college’s London Road and Radbrook campuses and all other sites it controls.
Richard Banks, human and physical resources director at Shrewsbury College, said: “If inhaling someone else’s cigarette smoke is bad for you indoors, it is bad for you outdoors.
“So from July 1 smoking will not be allowed anywhere on college premises.”
He added support had been put in place for people who want to quit smoking.
Meanwhile, smokers in Shrewsbury were today warned they face a fine of £80 if caught dropping cigarette butts in the street.
A survey recently revealed cigarette stubs are the number one type of litter on Shrewsbury’s streets.
Councillor Judith Williams, portfolio holder for litter at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, said: “We are conscious that with more people out smoking on the street, this could become a real issue.”
And the UK’s leading fostering charity, the Fostering Network, has drawn up new guidance for local authorities and agencies recommending smokers do not foster children under five.

Correct. This will be English law. The same has been the case just across Offa’s Dyke without any problem now for some months. This idiotic legislation forces smokers into the open so non smokers now have to hold their breath whilst they walk down the street! Of course a smoking ban by law was s u c h a good idea wasn’t it.

Councillor Judith Williams, portfolio holder for litter – what sort of job is this? This is what I pay my taxes for is it, some jumped up local politician who now having got her pious anti-smoking way now resorts to persecuting smokers who are now forced onto the streets. How many outdoor ash trays is she providing? Let me have a guess – zero.

I will be interested to see how Shrewsbury College proposes to stop people smoking in the open air. Such a ban has of course no legal basis and is thus unenforceable, as all such “smokefree” sites should realise. Furthermore, people have a right to privacy and can thus smoke in their own cars, in their own time, wherever they wish.
