Scheme to staff block of toilets
Tuesday 19th June 2007, 6:50AM BST.
A block of toilets in Shrewsbury town centre could be given an attendant to man them throughout the day under new proposals.
A report to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council’s Cabinet recommends an attendant is on duty at the public conveniences on St Alkmund’s Place.
Officers recommend that cabinet members back the move to see a member of staff at the toilets between 8am and 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.
But the report says the council does not have the money to fully man the new toilets currently being built in Abbey Foregate.
Instead it is being recommended councillors back moves to open the toilets with regular visits by a mobile member of staff who will maintain and clean them.
Councillors will discuss the provision of toilets in Shrewsbury at the cabinet meeting next Monday.
Members will also be asked to vote that a sum of £10,000 be made immediately available for investment in toilets as soon as the sale of the St Julian’s Friars facility goes through.
Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents’ Association is concerned that there are not enough adequate facilities.
The report says there were now fewer facilities, but those provided were of a higher quality in management, operation and cleaning.

Shrewsbury’s toilet facilities are a disgrace for a town that allegedly prides itself on being a major tourist venue. See Oswestry, Llangollen, Market Drayton for towns which now provide attendants full time with well maintained facilities. Shrewsbury council seems to have the money for grand projects but not for this less grandiose scheme which would actually be appreciated by so many of Shrewsbury’s visitors, not to mention residents. Perhaps they could divert some of the money they would like to spend converting the covenanted land into a car park.

As long as the block of toilets don’t get blocked – I don’t really care what happens !!!
