Woman punched by mugger
Saturday 16th June 2007, 9:30AM BST.
A mugger punched a woman in the face before grabbing her bag as she walked home from a night out in Newport.
The 38-year-old victim had her handbag stolen in the robbery, which happened at about 11pm yesterday in Avenue Road.
Police said the woman had just left the Shakespeare pub, Upper Bar, and was walking home when the offender approached from behind and struck her in the face.
She saw a white man run off towards Audley Avenue.
He is described as being in his mid 20s, 6ft 1in , of slim build and with shoulder-length dark hair.
He was believed to be wearing a dark top and jeans.
Police said it is possible the offender has thrown the bag away. Residents in Upper Bar, Granville Avenue and Audley Road and the surrounding area are urged to inspect their gardens for the bag.
It is described as a black leather shoulder bag, measuring about 6in by 4in. It contained bank cards and a small amount of cash.
Detective Constable Conrad Mallinson, who is investigating this incident, said: “It is appalling to think that while walking home from a night out this lady was assaulted and had her bag stolen.
“She has got injuries to her face consistent with a punch and was clearly distressed.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Telford police on 08457 444888.
