Honour for rose grower
Saturday 16th June 2007, 12:15PM BST.
Shropshire rose grower David Austin has been given an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, it was announced today.
Mr Austin’s work from his base in Albrighton revolutionised the art of the English rose across the world.
David Austin Roses was established in 1969 as its founder combined the superior shape of old domestic varieties with the ability to flower all year round.
After taking the Chelsea Flower Show by storm he attracted global attention and has now produced hundreds of varieties which are supplied around the world.
Mr Austin, who is 81 and still works full-time at the craft, was recognised for services to horticulture.
“I am absolutely delighted at the news,” he said today. “It wasn’t something I was expecting.”
The company is now part run with his son, also called David, and has a team of about 30 people who work around the year with thousands of seedlings to develop new flowers.
Mr Austin said: “I very much still enjoy it. It is very demanding, but I am glad it is something I can go on doing.”
One of those knighted in the honours list unveiled today is former cricketer Ian Botham.
The 51-year-old was the first player to score 5,000 runs and to take 300 wickets in Test matches.
He has also raised about £10 million for Leukaemia Research with long-distance charity walks including, in 1988, a trek over the Alps.
He said: “I’m delighted I’ve been honoured, not only for myself but for the people that have helped me get there.
“This will be very much a family celebration.”
