Romsley
Friday 15th June 2007, 10:05AM BST.
Distance: Three-and-a-half miles.
Terrain: Easy walking on lanes, paths and tracks.
1. Start by the telephone box just to the south of the crossroads in Romsley village. Walk back to the crossroads and continue ahead along the lane, following Romsley Ridge for about a mile.
There are views to the left over Alveley to the Clee Hills.
2. Just after the lane begins to descend, take the grassy track on the left. Cross the stile and walk down the left-hand side of two fields and into a parking/caravan sales area, continuing alongside the hedge and out on to the A442.
3. Turn right down the hill, right at the crossroads and right again on to the lane to Romsley.
4. Walk up through the attractive hamlet of Birdsgreen to the point where you left the lane earlier, and this time turn left up the wide track which eventually bears right and narrows to pass between two hedges.
5. The views over to the left now take in Kinver Edge. The track widens out and passes the impressive remains of Bowhills, which was once the manor house for Romsley.
Continue in the same general direction until reaching Stoneacre Farm on the left.
6. On reaching the lane, continue ahead to a staggered crossroads, turn right up the hill and right at the top to return to the start.
7. The lane you have been walking on for a large part of this walk is an old drovers’ road between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.
