Petton

Friday 15th June 2007, 9:47AM BST.

Distance: Two-and-a-half miles.
Terrain: Easy walking on lanes, paths and tracks.

petton.jpg1. Start this walk in a lay-by in the lane to Petton near to its junction with the A528 to the north-west of Burlton.

2. Walk back to the junction and turn left along the A528 past Wackley Farm until reaching Petton Lodge on the Left.

3. Turn left through the small gate, cross the lawn and climb the stile at the far side of the garden, into a large field.

Walk up the left-hand boundary to a stile on the left; cross over, turn right and cross another stile which leads on to a track.

4. Follow this between two pools, cross another stile and pass between a fence and a wood which eventually ends at another stile.

Cross over, turn left and then right to pick up a grassy track which leads uphill towards the grounds of Petton Hall.

5. Climb the stile into the grounds, pass to the left of a small brick building and continue ahead through the trees until reaching a marker post on the left.

Turn left as indicated, pass through the kissing gate into the field and walk up the slope to the church at the top.

6. Pass alongside the boundary wall and bear right down the drive; cross the cattle grid and turn left down the lane.

From the vicinity of the church there are fine views over towards Grinshill — however, the mound on which the church stands turns out not to be the fortification that you might expect. It is shown on the Ordnance Survey map as a disused pit.

7. Follow the lane down the hill and back to the start.
