Giant road services bid for area
Friday 1st June 2007, 12:50PM BST.
Multi-million pound plans to build new roadside services in Newport, including a motel and tourist information, could create more than 50 jobs in the town, it was revealed today.
Developer Armstrong Burton Planning is planning to build the giant service station, set to include a 41-bedroom motel and 1,600sq ft restaurant, on greenfield land.
The proposed services will be built close to the junction of the A41 and A518 in Newport and include spaces for 80 cars and 40 lorries, as well as a petrol filling station and shop.
A new tourist information centre and picnic facilities are included in the plans, with developers saying they are keen to get on-site “sooner rather than later”.
The Sutton Coldfield-based company is seeking permission for the development and Telford & Wrekin Council has already given ‘in principle’ approval for the site to be used as roadside services.
Mike Anderson, of Armstrong Burton Planning, said: “This development could create in the region of 50 jobs and, in terms of financing, we are looking at a multi-million pound project.
“It is currently a greenfield site, but has the benefit of outline planning approval, so this use has already been accepted in principle by the planning authority.
“What now needs to be agreed are matters such as sighting, design and appearance.
“This is a project that the developers are keen to proceed with, but we are in the hands of the planning authority.”
Mr Anderson added: “It is still early days in terms of the application process, but we are keen to secure planning permission as soon as possible and commence work on-site sooner rather than later.”
The application has been delegated to planning officers.
It is not expected to come before members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board.
A spokesman for the council said the application was registered on May 17 and no consultation responses or objections had yet been lodged by members of the public.
Newport town councillors have not yet decided whether to support the plans.
Dee Halliday, the town council clerk, said members will discuss the proposals at their next meeting on June 13.

Surely Newport town councillors will reject these proposals – after all, they usually do reject any proposals that may provide a much need jobs boost in the town! However, following the recent elections, I trust that the current councillors will have more idea than previous regimes. My only concern is that it’s a greenfield site – but, it is on a bypass, so it will be!

Is it going to be on a “Greenfield” site? How can we know?

Surely Newport town councillors will reject these proposals. These facilities are available within the town itself & so are not needed out on the by pass. The by pass was designed for traffic that wants to travel through without stopping so they would be a white elephant – built on greenfield site.

Why not top it off with a McDonalds, or something equally trashy?
Is this the best suggestion we can come up with, to create employment? A service station?!?!?!

Yet another example of the continuing encroachment into the remaining green areas around local towns. Do we really need another ugly service station blighting the landscape? If drivers are that desperate for fuel they can put some trade into Newport – who knows, they might actually stop in this lovely town and put some money into the LOCAL economy
