Busy month for vintage racer
Friday 1st June 2007, 9:05AM BST.
Vintage car enthusiast Peter Relph from Church Stretton is anticipating a busy month of motor sport in July.
He will be competing in his 1934 Austin 7 single seat racing car twice in Vintage Sports-Car Club events, first at Oulton Park race meeting in Cheshire on Saturday June 9 and at Loton Park Hill Climb in Shropshire over the weekend of 23-24 June 23-24.
An earlier outing this season to Wiscombe Park Hill Climb in Devon in mid-May proved to be a disappointing experience thanks to a deluge of rain.
Peter said: ” I am really looking forward to winding the car up and have a really good go at Oulton Park and Loton Park following previous disappointments, and hopefully beat my best time so far!
“The pleasure of competing at a VSCC event is unsurpassed due to the fast action, stunning cars, superb scenery, friendly people, and a relaxed atmosphere.”
The Vintage Sports-Car Club was founded in 1934, and has been holding competitive motor sport events for cars built before World War Two (1941) since the mid 1930s.
The club has hosted a hill climb event for pre-war cars for 15 years at Loton Park. Oulton Park was a popular racing venue for the club in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and early 90s and after a seven year break the club returned to the circuit in 2005 and has since held an annual ‘vintage’ event at the track.
At both of these events you will see vintage cars (built before 1931) and post vintage thoroughbreds (built before 1941) from marques such as Alvis, Bentley, MG, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Frazer Nash, Riley, Aston Martin, Delage, Morgan, and ERA.
Practice starts from 9am at Oulton Park, with a full programme of 11 races from 12.30pm. Tickets cost £20 per person on the gate, under 16s are free. Advanced tickets can be purchased from as little as £15 via www.motorsportdirect.co.uk or 0870 9509000.
Loton Park is a two day event with practice all day on Saturday June 23 with cars in action from 9.30am until about 5.30pm. Competitive runs are on Sunday starting at 10am and cars will be in action until late afternoon.
