Cooke takes time with options
Thursday 31st May 2007, 6:00PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town striker Andy Cooke insists he will not be rushed into the decision which could determine where he sees out the final stages of his playing career.
The 33-year-old has a 12-month contract offer on the table from his home town club after manager Gary Peters revealed his retained list earlier this week.
But the decision is far from straight-forward for Cooke who has been told he is unlikely to be a first choice forward when the new League Two campaign kicks off on Saturday August 11.
Derek Asamoah and Michael Symes provide the other striking options, while Peters is confident of completing the formalities on sealing another forward’s signature over the next week.
And Cooke is prepared to bide his time before indicating where his future lies. for next season.
“I had a chat with the gaffer on Tuesday,” he said.
“There is a contract on the table for me and that’s come from a clause in my initial contract where if I played so many games last season, there would be an offer of another 12 months,” he added.
“I’m going to try and get away and switch off from football for a week or so now and then sit down and think my options over.
“I don’t really want to up and leave and I’ve hoped since I have been here that I would finish my career at Shrewsbury.
“But I also want to play as much first-team football as possible.
“Competition has never bothered me and I’ve always taken new signings at a club in my stride because that’s the way football is.
“I’ve always seen it as whoever is performing the best and sticking the goals away at that time will be in the team.
“But we will see what happens. I’m going to weigh up my options and not rush into anything.”
Cooke grabbed a dozen goals from 23 starts in his first season with his home town club, including hat-tricks against Stockport twice.
But his undoubted highlight came in the play-off semi-final just ten days ago when he came off the bench in the second half to strike the two second leg goals at MK Dons which fired Shrewsbury to the Wembley final against Bristol Rovers.

I think he would be best to stay with Town. Even if not first choice he is bound to be on the bench at least and football being so unpredictable he will probably end up with as many starts as he had last season.

Cooke is coming to the end of his career but he has a lot to offer at League Two level. He will get his chance because Gary Peters plays footballers who are on form. Cooke scored 12 goals this season including 2 hat-tricks against Stockport and the brace in the play-off semi-final to get us to Wembley. Hang on in there young man!
