Stores in dark after power cut

Tuesday 29th May 2007, 11:46AM BST.

Shops were forced to trade in the dark after a power cut knocked out electricity to more than 1,000 homes and businesses in Bridgnorth.

A fault with a cable caused the power to go off.

Every business in High Street and Whitburn Street in Bridgnorth was affected by the black-out yesterday morning, while the streets were thronged with people.

Staff at Tesco Express, in High Street, said the store was in darkness until just after 10am, when the power came back on.

But the tills remained working thanks to a back-up generator, so staff could still serve customers despite the power cut.

However, the Co-op store in Postern Gate was so dark that staff could not open until the power came on at 10.30am.

Manager Carl Warrender said: “We opened at 8.30am and when the power went off we couldn’t allow customers in because of health and safety reasons.

“As soon as the power came back we were open as normal.”

Central Networks said the power was back on everywhere by 11am after engineers switched the electricity supplies over.

Spokeswoman Deanna Mooney said the problem was due to a fault with an overhead power cable.

She said: “The power went off at 8.46am and 1,047 people were affected.

“We think it is down to an overhead cable fault. Engineers worked quickly to get people back on as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the fault.”
