Fish is off menu for us veggies

Thursday 24th May 2007, 10:27AM BST.

Why is it that, as a vegetarian, when you call a restaurant to find out what vegetarian dishes they serve, you are asked if you eat fish?

What is the confusion here? Quite simply vegetarians do not eat anything from a slaughtered or dead animal. Vegans do not take anything from a living or dead animal. And, just for clarification, fish are animals – they have feelings.

I know that there are some misguided people out there that like to call themselves vegetarians, but then eat fish.

It is not the restaurants that are at fault but these foolish folk that cause this confusion, although the restaurants should point this out to them as well.

When I ask the restaurants why they think this, they say that some vegetarian customers ask for fish. Who are these people?

If you are fishing for facts, restaurants and so-called vegetarians alike know that vegetarians do not eat fish, full stop.

The Vegetarian Society, who have a department dedicated to getting this message out, are quite happy to supply caterers with a free pack.

Apparently the term for someone who eats fish but not land-based animals is a pesco-vegetarian.

Personally, I take the view that it has (or had) a face, I won’t eat it . . . and I don’t fancy eating worms anyway!

I read somewhere that Cheese & Onion crisps have more meat extract in them than Beef & Onion crisps. Am I correct ?

Oh c’mon, even Jesus, the son of God, was partial to a nice bit of fish!
