Strike at DVLA cause of backlog

Friday 18th May 2007, 10:18AM BST.

Staff at a Shropshire DVLA office are facing a massive backlog of work leading to major delays getting vehicle documents processed, it emerged today.

The organisation is blaming recent strike action by members of the PCS Union for the huge build-up of paperwork at the Shrewsbury office.

Employees are now working on Saturdays in a bid to process hundreds of delayed applications.

Newtown vehicle importer Humphreys and Foulkes says it is currently suffering problems getting tax discs sorted out.

The DVLA’s target is to have them processed two days after paperwork is handed in. But the firm says it is still waiting for one tax disc 10 days after handing in the documents.

Graham Foulkes, a partner in the business, said it was having a bad knock-on effect for customers.

“We put some paperwork in on May 3 and we still haven’t got a tax disc for one vehicle,” he said.

“I think it’s very unfortunate because the people at Shrewsbury have been working on Saturday mornings to try and catch up.”

Spokesman for the DVLA Darren Wheatley said: “The reason there is a backlog is because of strike action by PCS union members.

“Staff are trying their best to get it back.

“The target for processing paperwork is 48 hours. It was taking 10 days but they have got it down to eight and they want to get it down more than that as well.”
