Firms targeted in card scam

Two businesses in Oswestry have been targeted by fraudsters who tried to buy thousands of pounds worth of goods using stolen credit cards.
West Mercia Police have warned businesses to be alert to the telephone scam.
Officers said that stolen cards were being used to make expensive orders.
The two businesses in Oswestry were targeted in the last few days, with the offenders ordering £1,000 of champagne and asking for it to be sent in a taxi to Birmingham.
It is believed the same offenders were responsible for ordering £1,000 of tyres about six months ago from another local company.
They were also collected by taxi and the card used turned out to be stolen.
The names of the two Oswestry businesses targeted have not been revealed by the police.
Constable Royston Alderwick, who is investigating the incidents, today urged business owners and staff across the county to be aware of the scam and has called for anyone with information to contact police.
He said: “If anybody is contacted with a large order that the caller wants delivering by taxi, I would urge staff to be alert and not to send the goods.
“The likelihood is that this will be a scam.”
Mr Alderwick said police were investigating the incidents. Anyone with information can contact police on 08457 444888. Information can also be passed on via the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
