Mad Jack’s, Shrewsbury

Many restaurants take years to perfect their dishes, hone their style and cement their reputation.
But within weeks of opening, Mad Jack’s restaurant in Shrewsbury has already staked its claim as one of the best eateries in the county town. That may seem an ambitious claim to make, especially given the high quality of the town’s numerous restaurants, but the new establishment has already made a significant impact on diners.
My partner Tom and I headed to the restaurant after a hectic day at work when we fancied treating ourselves to a night out.
We had noticed the transformation going on inside the former Jesters restaurant and had been keen to check it out as soon as the new venue, run by Danny and Ann DiTella who also own the Mytton and Mermaid Hotel at Atcham, opened.
On the Thursday evening we visited, we were pleased to find it filled with people enjoying champagne cocktails and nibbles in the bar area.
The restaurant is bigger than the frontage suggests, with a number of tastefully decorated rooms. The contemporary style is given an historic twist with artwork featuring the local 18th-Century squire Jack Mytton, who squandered his fortune and ended up in jail following a life of riotous behaviour, and gives his name to the restaurant.
An added bonus is a courtyard area, which promises to be a perfect place to relax with a chilled bottle of wine in summer.
We were greeted by the first of the friendly members of staff we were to encounter during our visit, who offered us a drink and a menu. The carefully thought out menu features a tantalising list of dishes which, wherever possible, use local ingredients and suppliers.
After much consideration, I opted for the oak-smoked salmon, with Martini and lemonade jelly, green olive tapenade and lime creme fraiche (£6.95) to start. Having never had Martini jelly with salmon before I was intrigued about how this would work, but the beautifully presented plate was matched by the equally delicious taste.
The salmon was simply wonderful, with a perfect smoky, fresh taste, and the olive tapenade was also a delight. In an attempt to find any fault at all with the entire meal, I would say that I could take or leave the jelly, but in all honesty, there was nothing wrong with it.
Tom chose fresh linguini with hand-picked crab, chilli and lemon and shavings of pecorino (£6.25) and I just managed to grab a taste before he devoured the whole lot. It was delicious and light, and the flavours of the crab and rocket were not overwhelmed by the pasta. The presentation was excellent and was declared a really fresh starter.
For my main course, I considered the ricotta and parsley gnocchi with roasted-tomato sauce (£11.95) but plumped for the fillet of oak- smoked haddock with crushed potatoes, spring onions and greens, poached hen’s egg, Hollandaise and char-grilled vine tomatoes (£13.95).
I asked for the dish without the egg and this request was met without argument. The haddock was simply divine. From the first taste I was delighted by the flavour combinations, with the fish perfectly matching the wonderfully fresh tomatoes, and the tasty Hollandaise adding a further dimension to the dish.
There was just the right amount of crushed potatoes to complement the sublime haddock, which was deliciously smoky.
Tom, who always opts for meat when we dine out as I am not a fan, selected the char-grilled Gloucester Old Spot pork chop (£12.95). The succulent meat was complemented extremely well with tomatoes and a pear and sage potato cake.
It was a generously sized portion which, on first glance, Tom thought would be too big but he declared it nicely filling after he scraped his plate clean.
We were comfortably full at the end of our mains, but in the interests of the review, we felt it our duty to sample a dessert. We opted to share a baked lemon cheesecake with blueberry ice cream (£5.50) which was, again, scrumptious. The ice cream was tasty and unusual, and a terrific accompaniment to the cheesecake.
The biscuit base was pleasantly crumbly and the cake was light and refreshing. Despite claiming to be too full, we devoured the lot and proclaimed it a perfect way to finish a very satisfying meal.
We accompanied our dinner with a bottle of Italian Altana Di Vico Pinot Grigio 2006 (£14.95), which was fresh and went particularly well with my fish dishes. The wine list is extensive, with a number of half bottles and wines by glass available. We also had a bottle of mineral water, but I was pleased to see other tables were supplied with iced tap water when asked.
The service throughout was top notch, from the person who saw us to our table and took the time to talk to us about the history of the building – despite the restaurant being fully booked – to the waitress who brought an extra spoon for my jelly starter.
It is the finer touches that can make a meal truly memorable, and the staff at Mad Jack’s were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes, offering advice to other diners who requested help with their decision making.
As well as the dinner menu, there is also lunch served between midday and 2.30pm and a mouthwatering tapas-style nibbles menu served from midday until 10pm. The chefs plan to change the menu seasonally, which gives me a perfect excuse for a return visit in the not too distant future.
Having said that, I’m sure the lure of the nibbles and champagne (which is available by the glass as well as in cocktails) will draw me back before then.
The restaurant is an exciting and welcome addition to Shrewsbury’s food scene, which I have no doubt will prove a massive hit.
I don’t give five stars lightly, but I simply could not find fault with the food, service or atmosphere at Mad Jack’s.

I would like to know if it is absolutely nescessary to have fur rugs over the sofas in the bar. They would appear to be real fur which I have to say is rather off putting if you are a vegatarian like myself.

They are Goatskin Rugs, I am not vegetarian, but they moult all over your clothes, dreadful mess.

I would like to add to Lisa Harris’s comment about Mad Jacks, I have to agree 100% with the comments reference the real fur rugs draped over the sofa’s. I to am a vegetarian and was completely put off by the rugs and the lack of vegetarian choice on the menu, so I cancelled my table and went elsewhere to eat.

We had a meal at Mad Jacks pm 1st June for our wedding anniversary after reading the fantastic reviews about it. Perhaps we picked an off night. We were seated and were pleased that we were given a quiet table (not right next to other diners like some restaurants like to do) but perhaps that was our disadvantage as we were then quickly forgotten, after watching several other people get served we had to attract the attention of the waiter and ask if we could order our food and wine. I had a scallop starter off the special menu which was very tasty but at £7.50 for what seemed 2 scallops sliced in half to make 4 seemed a tadge expensive to me. My husband really enjoyed his calves liver starter, but both of our mains werent that exciting really. It was nice to try somewhere different but we wouldnt rush back to be honest.

We thought the rugs look fabulous! A really nice touch and very ‘in’ at the minute! Myself and my fiance had a lovely meal with good service and good wine. Can’t complain! Love the outside space, and funky decor. Just what Shrewsbury needed! Have and would recommend to others!

We too had heard the amazing reviews and were exceptionally disappointed with our visit. The food was a huge let down and the white wine we asked to be served chilled was warm. A number of diners were complaining that night about the standard of the meals. We didn’t jump on the band wagon but wrote expressing our disappointment. we are still awaiting the courtesy of a reply

We had lunch here and thought the food was fantastic.Great service and a very nice feel to the restaurant. We are planning to go again to try the dinner menu
PS you have to try the chips – truly fantastic !

Average food, average service, too cramped, not enough space for a pre- or post-dinner drink. Not at all like its sister hotel, The Mytton, which is of a much better standard. The ceilings could also do with painting again as well(as could the dingy walkway to the toilets and some voile in the ladies bathroom to avoid people looking in from the courtyard garden would be good!) Must try harder?

Chef badly let down by waiting staff. No knowledge of what they are serving from the “amuse bouche” through to such basics as bread.Led to my guest eating meat in her bread inadvertently and her monkfish served with lardons as a principle ingredient not on menu. The first time she has eaten meat in her life. Had to then send replacement fish back as it was miniscule. No apology!Bill paid in full despite their errors. The Mytton and Mermaid was good. This is not. 2 other tables complained also the evening we were there. The wine list is excellent. They cannot cope with what they are trying to achieve at this venue.

Having eaten here on a number of occasions including our wedding anniversary, I booked for my birthday and invited friends from Warwickshire. Unfortunately I hadn’t looked at the menu from a vegetarian point of view but quickly realised my guest were going to be disappointed and they were. Choice very limited, goat rugs not popular although I liked them thinking they were fake and the service staff let the side down as unable to answer questions adequately… what a shame. On a positive, lovely wine and cocktails!

We dined last night at Mad Jacks and couldn’t believe that we were dining in a Shropshire venue. The food was delicious with many unusual and exciting combinations. How wonderful that the proprietors are offering something so different and chic to benefit our dining out opportunities in Shrewsbury. The decor is stunning and as up to the minute as the trendiest of city brasseries. The service was very friendly. The tropical court yard is quite amazing! I enquired as to the goat skins and was informed that they are actually reindeer pelts. Intrigued by the comments of the vegitarians and being an animal lover myself i made further inquiries. Reindeer herds are humanely culled BY LAW and this is very strictly controlled by the government in lapland. The numbers of reindeer are controlled so as to preseve the welfare of the herds. Seems quite sensible to use the pelts for something if the animal was culled by order of a government! We have already booked again and would have no problem recommending Mad Jacks to our friends. Just give them a chance to settle in and hopefully we will have a forward looking up market eatery for many years to come!

I really like this venue. Its great for pre-night out drinks or for a casual few before heading home. Superb inside and although some comments about the ‘fur’ has been made I don’t see many complaints about Foxes heads and stuffed animals you may find is some more old fashioned and ‘chincy’ eateries. I’ve also eaten here. Personally I received good service. The food was also of a good standard. From the comments above I can only assume teething troubles for the new restaurant with new staff. Based on the Myttons reputation I think it would be fair to say that within a few months this will be one of ‘the’ venues to eat and drink at.

I can’t understand what any of these others were talking about .. my boyfriend and I went (Saturday 29th September 2007) after being recommended by several people through out the town and had a meal to die for !!
The food was exceptional (which is very fair to say as I have eaten in top class restaurants all around the country/world) I had the pork to start, my boyfriend had the scallops (yes agreed not a huge portion however for that standard of food and for 3 courses @ £25) – I had more than I could eat for my starter ! We then both had the lamb for our main – again it was cooked to perfection and ample portions for a main course (we both couldn’t finish ours!)
The dessert was lovely too – again just enough not to over-do-it.
The waiters were all lovely and very attentive, the champagne was ice cold (which is usally the restaurants downfall – however not here !). All in all a delicious meal and a very pleasant evening – we are planning to go back very soon (even though it is an hour and a half’s drive for us – It was worth it !! )

Well I ate here on Thurday 11th October and I don’t know wether it was teething problems listening to these reports ( although some sound ridiculous , reindeer skin not ok but leather sofa’s are fine , you people are weird..)
Anyway I had come up from London on business and stayed in one of their surprizingly beautiful rooms right in the town centre. I had eaten in Gordon Ramseys the week before with clients and found this whole experience of a similar standard ( and a lot cheaper!! )
Well done ! I will be back , loved the decor, service and food was fab…

The food, service, setting, fur rugs et al are all first class.
The menu is very well thought out and the wine list is varied. Even the cheapest bottle of white burgundy is crisp and chilled to perfection.
I have never had a problem whilst dining there. The staff are attentive. I have asked what things are and they have gone to the kitchen to ask. Nothing wrong with that.
The prices are incredibly affordable and the special touch of the hand baked artisan breads before the starter is some of the best that you will ever taste.
Shrewsbury is lucky to have MadJacks, most of the other restaurants are appaling compared.
I also particularly love The CornHouse where the food is amazing too. Grant is such a gentleman and greets us everytime that we go in.

P.s Forgot to add on the last comment, the rugs on the sofa’s in the bar ar Deer skin and not any of the other animals that others have made up in their scathing comments.

The fur just put us off.
I know we vegetarians are a minority but it still ruined the evening.

Am looking for a restaurant in Shrewsbury for Christmas 2008. Would like to read comments about Mad Jacks. Perhaps you should read your reviews and get rid of the skins!

After reading various reviews we decided to try Mad Jacks, it seems we were mad to eat there! The service was very, very slow and when the main course eventually arrived both were overcooked and cold: the waitress said this was the 1st evening of their new menu – we felt this was not true, and besides did not excuse such a poor experience. Very disappointed.

Well i think you all need to revisit Mad Jacks. Id eat there every night if i could!
im possibly the fussiest eater in the world and i have never had a complaint there, the food is fabulous and service spot on. And the staff are lovely, and one in particular happens to be gorgoeus!
Ans by the way the fur skins are actually REINdeer!! there is a difference. They use reindeer because they are overpopulating the area they come from!
Please go back and try it again x

I went a few weeks ago with my brother for a few drinks, a really nice atmosphere and friendly staff made mad jacks the perfect place to eat or drink. And can i say the FUR was a real touch of class, so if your a vegie, veg out somewhere else!! its only a rug!

I went to Mad Jacks last night and I would just like to say what a lovely evening we both had, the service and atmosphere was fantastic. Thankyou very much!!

I disagree with the people who have complained about the fur rugs. The place is very luxurious, and this is just part of the interior. Us veggies must accept that other people are not vegetarian, and try not to be offended. For godness sake, just sit somewhere else.
Some close family friends have recently stayed at Mad Jacks for several nights and find the decor not only attractive but comfortable, commenting specifically on the pleasing size of the rooms!
