Driver killed in HGV smash

Wednesday 9th May 2007, 12:20PM BST.

police1.jpgA motorist aged in his 30s has died after his car was in collision with a heavy goods lorry, before hitting a tree in north Shropshire today.

The driver, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident on the A442 Hodnet to Peplow Road shortly after 5.30am.

The smash happened near the Hodnet bypass island and involved his saloon car and a HGV.

Shropshire Ambulance spokeswoman Daphne Lewis said: “West Midlands Ambulance Service received calls just after 5.30am to attend a serious collision on the A442 close to Peplow.

“It is understood that a car had collided with a heavy goods lorry and then hit a tree.”

She said two ambulances and an incident support officer attended the scene but the driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, had died.

Firefighters from Hodnet and Market Drayton also attended the accident along with the fire service’s rescue tender from Wellington.

Motorists faced severe rush-hour jams after the road was blocked by police following the crash.

Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: “The driver of the HGV, also a man, was not injured but left shaken by the incident.

“The car was travelling towards Telford and the lorry in the opposite direction. The road was closed at the Hodnet roundabout and at Crudgington and remains shut while collision investigators work.”

A Telford man who died in a car crash on the town’s Eastern Primary was named today as Mohammed Ali. The 20-year-old, of Mafeking Road, Hadley, was driving a Honda Civic in the Stirchley area when the accident happened at about 6.15am on Monday.

I live on the A442 just before where crash happened. Although I am very sad for all the family concerned and my heart goes out to them all, but the A442 is treated like a race track for most drivers. Motocylists are always racing each other up and down this road most weekends.
They are laying chippings down and signs are up for drivers to go 20mph but none of the drivers stick to it and they still overtake each other. They have just reopened the road as I’m writing this to you and they still are going way too fast.

I reply to Debra Moreton’s article.
I can appreciate your concern about motorists travelling at speed along the A442. But it is not always speed that is the cause in some of the trafic accidents that have occured recently on this stretch of road. You state that “motorcyclists are always racing each other up and down this road”. However, the tragic accident where the motorcyclists was killed on the 3rd May was not the result of a speeding motorcyclist. Just like car drivers, you do get the odd few idiot bikers, but please, do not tar us all with the same brush.

I knew the person that tragically died in the accident and i would just like to say how sorry i am to his family and close friends my heart goes out to you all, words can not express nor change how much you are hurting ,i am thinking of you all at this terrible time. Hugo was a good fella and will be sadly missed by us all, i remenber him drinking in the corbet and working on the doors a few years back now but will never forget. In regards to the first comment here, dont you think you should have a little more respect to this person, i cant see a middle aged man racing at 5.30am, i feel this comment is slighly insensitive and rather upset me, not to mention his large family!!! i think you were wrong to comment on this page as you just wanted to post your own thoughts, you had no right!

In reply to Sam, I agree with you i thought that the message left above was also insensitive, my husband and I also knew Hugo very well as my husband was in the Army for 12 years with him. Hugo would not of been driving at a stupid speed that time of the morning, and after Hugo also being a driver with the Army for many years, he was a very careful driver.

Our thoughts are with the family and Hugo will be missed by so many people. We will also be thinking of him always and are lucky enough to have some lovely photos of him.
