Graffiti vandals face fine

Friday 4th May 2007, 5:50AM BST.

Vandals found spraying graffiti in Bridgnorth’s streets will face an £80 on-the-spot fine or an appearance in court.

Police have pledged to crack down on those caught spraying buildings and fences and clean up the town after a spate of incidents in recent weeks.

In addition, those found carrying equipment to spray graffiti will be faced with the same punishments as they would if they were actually spraying graffiti.

Sergeant Bob Matthews, of Bridgnorth police, said: “We seem to be getting more graffiti around the town, particularly in places like Stoneway Steps and the area near the Theatre on the Steps.

“We will be concentrating on getting it cleared up and we have the powers to stop and search people to see if they are carrying spray cans.”

He added: “Anyone caught can be given an £80 fixed penalty fine or could have to appear in court.”

“This is just one part of anti-social behaviour affecting Bridgnorth that we are trying to get rid of.”

Sgt Matthews said the matter had been raised at a number of Partners and Communities Together meetings.

A much tougher stance is needed. Perhaps we should bring back the birch or even the cat o’ nine tails. This all goes back to the lack of discipline instilled in children at school.

Whilst I agree a tougher stance is needed, I think comments of such an extreme nature as this are unhelpful. Its all too easy to blame schools for lack of discipline, what about the parents? Too many parents seem to think they have no responsibility at all for their offspring who they allow to wander around the town causing a nuisance. Fine the youngsters £80 and fine their parents £800. That might make a difference !
