Grand boost to air medic appeal
Thursday 3rd May 2007, 10:30AM BST.
Three fundraising events have raised more than £1,000 towards the Shropshire Star’s Flying Doctor Appeal, taking it a step closer to its £70,000 target.
The latest was a St George’s quiz night at the Bull’s Head pub on Dawley Bank, which raised £150.
The quiz night was organised by members of the Bank Community Group and supported by Lawley and Overdale Parish Council and the Bull’s Head.
Eleven teams took part, including two teams from the parish council, two from the Ring O’Bells and the rest provided by the pub regulars. Quizmaster was parish council chairwoman Pauline Picken, with the top prize arranged by Phil Blackburn, chairman of the Bank Community Group.
The winning team was one of two teams entered by the council. However the winners donated the top prize up for auction. As a result, taking into account the entry fee for teams, raffle and auction, the event raised £150.
Collections are continuing, with collection boxes at the Bull’s Head and Walker’s shop.
A coffee morning at Leebotwood Village Hall has raised £200 towards the appeal, and an extra £50 has come from a whist drive. Both were held by the village hall committee.
And a cheque for £631.50 has been presented by the catering staff at the Apley restaurant of Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, who raised the cash through a raffle.
The Shropshire Star’s Flying Doctor Appeal aims to fund a Flying Doctor to join the crew of the Shropshire-based air ambulance, taking its on-board medical skills and capabilities to new heights.
