Sign thefts put drivers at risk

Sunday 29th April 2007, 12:28AM BST.

Thieves are putting lives at risk after snatching about £15,000 worth of road signs.

In recent weeks at least 20 have been stolen in north Shropshire, many being warning signs alerting drivers to hazards.

The thieves have targeted signs at locations including the A429 and A53 at Market Drayton and the A41 at Hinstock.

Direction signs, tourist information and advanced warning signs have all been stolen and police believe they may have been taken for the scrap value of the aluminium. But it is the taxpayers who will be forking out at least £15,000 to replace them.

Chris Edwards, Shropshire County Council’s head of network management, said: “The people stealing these signs are obviously putting lives at risk. They are breaking the law. This is also putting a huge strain on the public purse.”

Constable Stephen Cummings appealed for anyone who had information or who sees any suspicious activity to contact police.

He said: “The cost to replace these stolen signs is estimated to be more than £15,000. The offenders are unbolting them from their posts and about 20 have been stolen since February.

“I would appeal to anyone who might have information as to who is responsible for these thefts or sees anything suspicious to get in touch.

“I am also keen to hear from any scrap metal merchants who might be offered anything resembling a road sign to refuse and contact police immediately. It is an offence to buy stolen goods.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
