Shoppers go wild – over new bag

Wednesday 25th April 2007, 12:11PM BST.

One happy shopper with her special designer bag is Charlie Horton, from Bridgnorth, who was at the town's Sainsbury's store this morningHundreds of excited shoppers besieged Shropshire supermarkets from 4am today to get their hands on this year’s must-have accessory – a designer shopping bag.

The limited edition bags, which have sold on eBay for up to £175, went on sale at Sainsbury’s stores across the county at 8am.

Crowds of people queued from as early as 4am to snap up the £5 bags, which bear the slogan “I’m not a plastic bag”.

Designed by Anya Hindmarch, the bags have been produced as a trendy alternative to using throw-away carrier bags.

The Sainsbury’s store at Meole Brace Retail Park in Shrewsbury saw dozens of shoppers queuing for the 90 bags on sale.

Lisa Miller, the store spokeswoman, said: “There were a few people queuing from Aberystwyth from 4am this morning.

“The store opened at 7am and the 90 tickets were all handed out by about 7.40am. As soon as 8am came the 90 people with tickets were able to claim their bags. We have had a lot of phone calls since but they have all gone.”

Bridgnorth Sainsbury’s employed extra security to keep expectant shoppers at bay this morning as just 30 bags went on sale at 8am.

At the head of the queue was 17-year-old Christina Thompson, of Bridgnorth, who had been there since 5am.

She said: “I think the bags are popular because they are a limited edition. And they’re really pretty and made by a top designer.”

Customers queue for the bags at the Sainsbury's store in ShrewsburyThe Sainsbury’s Local store, on Forge Retail Park in Telford, also had 30 of the bags to sell and bosses beefed up security to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Crowds of people were waiting outside Sainsbury’s in Oswestry from 7am.

The bag shot to fame after a host of celebrities were photographed carrying it.

It was developed with the ‘We Are What We Do’ movement in a bid to cut the number of plastic bags used in the UK.

Some 20,000 of the reusable cotton bags went on sale at 450 Sainsbury’s stores today.

Manager of the Bridgnorth store, Paul Cunnison, said he was pleased with how the morning went.

So let me get this right.

People were prepared to queue for a shopping bag that a few vapid ‘celebrities’ have been seen with?

    These people are idiots.

You wouldn’t be saying it was pathetic or ridiculous if you could make £150 plus profit from it!

To be honest – I think that any publicity is good.

If having a celebrity show case a bag which is good for the environment makes people across the country use it – It can’t be bad.

I bought one this morning and I bought it for the right reasons – I certainly will NOT be selling mine on Ebay!

Presumably the people buying these bags are the same hapless people who bought the blue plastic baskets a couple of years ago. (Also in the name of the environment!)

Sainsbury’s should be ashamed of themselves for exploiting weak, stupid people and fleecing them of money they can probably ill- afford spending! I would be interested to know whether Anya Hindmarsh had the integrity to have the bags made in U.K. or whether they were imported from elsewhere!

If I see someone carrying such a bag I will heckle at them for their idiocy!

So to all the people jeering at those who have bought them – I can safety assume that you dont dispose of any plastic bags at all and you recycle everything you can?

Why people are becoming abusive about a persons choice to buy a bag I dont know. To me it seems like a fun and responsible thing to do if it means you are reducing your personal plastic bag use. Anyway, what you spend your money on has naff all to do with anyone else. People who get up at 5am for the January sales dont get the same so why should people who got up to get their bag?

I think some people are feeling a teeny, weeny bit jealous and really, really wanted a bag so now they have to abuse everyone else to make themselves feel that little bit better!

My friend has got one for £2500. I think it is a waste of money for a bag that was MEANT to be for £5
