Council rejects lap dance club

Plans to create Shrewsbury’s first lap and pole dancing club have been thrown out after councillors argued the proposed site was unsuitable and would increase residents’ fear of crime.
At last night’s meeting of the borough council’s development control committee, councillors voted against officer recommendations and turned down the exotic dancing club planned for Castle Gates.
Jill Bedford, from Underdale Road, who spoke at the meeting was given rapturous applause by a packed public gallery after she warned councillors the venue could lead to concerns over public safety, organised crime and the decline of that area of the town.
She also said women would increasingly fear for their safety walking along the nearby Dana.
The club was proposed for the first and second floors of Central Hall, in Castle Gates and would offer customers semi-naked, nude, pole and lap dances.
A spokeswoman for applicants Gemini Games Ltd told the meeting there was no evidence to suggest the club would lead to an increase in crime and said bosses would introduce stringent security and CCTV to ensure public safety.
But Councillor Brian Rees said the proposed entrance to the club on Castle Gates would cause conflict between customers queuing for the neighbouring pub.
Councillor Christine Freestone said that despite the fact herself and other members were against the application, the committee needed to distinguish between moral and planning issues in making a decision.
The committee refused the plans on the grounds of increased fear of crime, detriment to the locality and potential conflict near the Castle Gates entrance.

I understood that one proposed entrance to this venue was to be from the public walkway on The Dana which is the main route to and from town for residents of Castlefields and nearby areas and can entirely understand why they would not be keen to see a venue like this open there, not to mention the eyesore at what is for may people travelling by train and car the entrance to the town centre.

The kinds of people that frequent sex shops are very different from those that go to strip clubs.

With reference to Jill Bedford’s comment, I take it that women of Shrewsbury currently feel thay can walk along the Dana at night without fear of being attacked or assualted? Yes men, (particularly when in large groups and under the influence of alcohol)do get boisterous, but to rubber stamp them as potential attackers because they’ve visited a lap dancing club is verging on the ridiculous.

Well done! WE can still go to the Library without too much hassle!

Common sense prevails, this part of Shrewsbury is so interesting to residents and tourists.

Why does Shrewsbury seem to attract sex shops, pole dancing joints? Its got so much to offer without lowering the tone of that part of the town!

There is nothing wrong with having a pole dancing or lap dancing club in Shrewsbury, if men wish to use it then they will, its just easier for them to have one near-by. If people do not wish to be assosciated with the club then they simply have to keep away. Women feel now that they are threatened walking over the dana, so it’d be no differnet with a club situated there. Women are warned by the police, etc, not to walk in dark areas alone at night. If they take this advice they will use an alternative route to the Dana anyway.
