Workhouse needs £340,000

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 5:50AM BST.

In the courtyard of the disused workhouse are, left to right, Mark Burnett, of The Workhouse Project, and John Hainsworth, trustee of the Llanfyllin Dolydd Building Preservation TrustCampaigners fighting to save Llanfyllin’s Y Dolydd Workhouse from developers have just five months to raise £340,000.

The Architectural Heritage Fund, which lent the Y Dolydd preservation trust money to buy the listed building, has just agreed to put back the repayment until the end of September.

The money was due to have been paid in February and it looked as though much of the workhouse would have to be turned into housing to cover the cost.

But a new plan to turn the Victorian building into a community enterprise, environment, arts and education centre has impressed the national funding body.
