Title dream on after Witton woe

Tuesday 17th April 2007, 10:54AM BST.

Rob SmithAFC Telford United’s title hopes are back in their own hands after defeat for UniBond League leaders Witton Albion – but boss Rob Smith insists that changes nothing.

Witton lost 1-0 at Gateshead last night, a result that means the Bucks will be crowned champions if they can win all of their remaining three games.

They remain in third position today, behind Witton and Burscough, but would would be guaranteed to overhaul them if they win at North Ferriby on Saturday and then take maximum points from next week’s clashes with their two rivals.

The Bucks go to Witton next Tuesday before finishing the campaign at home to Burscough on April 28.

“Witton losing doesn’t alter our position at all,” said Smith. “It just means we’ve still got to win our last three games.

“From our perspective and our planning it hasn’t changed a thing. I’m not saying it wasn’t a good result for us, but if we don’t do the job on Saturday it doesn’t mean anything.

“It’s not an easy ask to win three games, especially in such a crazy league.

“Witton have lost six of their last 12 games (in all competitions) and it just shows that it can effect you when you get close and you can see the finishing line.

“Whatever happens now, there’s going to be something on the last game, whether it’s to win the league or to finish high enough to give ourselves a home game in the play-offs.”

Smith is not getting carried away with his side’s prospects, but is cautiously optimistic that they are running in to form at just the right time. They beat Frickley 4-1 on Saturday, ending a depressing run of 11 games without a win.

“In recent weeks panic had been setting in and some players were taking the easy option to play long. We’ve tried to get them out of it and playing football again.

“Anything could happen yet, but I just sense we’ve turned a little bit of a corner,” said Smith.

With Witton hitting some dodgy form this could still be our year, at least its back in our own hands now. Up the Bucks.
