Lap dancing club plan backed
Tuesday 17th April 2007, 1:40PM BST.
Shrewsbury’s first lap and pole dancing club looks set to go ahead after the plans were recommended for approval, it was revealed today.
The exotic dancing club would be created on the first and second floors of Central Hall, in Castle Gates, which is currently the Shropshire Business Centre, and offer customers semi-naked and nude, pole and lap dances.
The club will also provide private performances by professional dancers and would be the first club of its kind in the town.
Gemini Games Ltd’s plan for the “upmarket gentleman’s club” has attracted objections from Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents’ Association, which claims it is “inappropriate and undesirable”. Six members of the public have also objected to the club on “moral grounds”.
But borough council planning officers today recommended that the club is allowed to open. A final decision will be made by councillors next Tuesday.
In a report to the authority’s development control committee, planning officers said: “It is clear in planning law that moral reasons for opposing development are not planning objections.
“The development is an acceptable use in this location and can take place without detriment to neigh- bouring uses or the conservation area in general.”
Officers are recommending the club’s opening hours are limited to 6pm to 2am, Monday to Thursday, and from 6pm to 3.30am on Fridays and Saturdays. They also want the club’s windows to be blanked out.
The venue would have a capacity of 150 people and a licensed bar. But the club was criticised by Shrewsbury priest the Reverend David Uffindell who said it would lead to prostitutes on the streets and Councillor Andrew Wagner said he had “grave concerns”.
If granted planning permission, the club would still require a premise licence for the performance of adult entertainment dancing.

It is essential to promote Shrewsbury as a safe, family friendly and prosperous area. Attractions such as the Castle and the Quarry all reflect this aim. The opening of a lap dancing club in Castle Gates is an extremely ill thought out plan, which fails to consider the children in the area, nor may the individuals [particularly females] who will feel vulnerable passing the club on the way to or from work or whilst visiting the town for its greatest economic benefit – tourism.

I agree with Mr Peasbody, they should think of the children. Perhaps the addition of a creche facility would help.

Why does everyone always try and see the worst in situations. The truth is many places /city’s have these types of clubs and they don’t seem to suffer. Anyone who doesn’t want to see anything just don’t go in. I also fail to see how children could be in danger as anyone under 18 would not be allowed in and from the outside im sure it will be tastefull and look no worse than any other type of club

I suppose on reflection, such an establishment might help to alleviate such incidents such as the little problem in Frankwell last year. Perhaps the inclusion of a “Wacky Warehouse” at the lap dancing club would be of use to families on a day trip to Shrewsbury – then, the mother could go shopping, the children could play in the Wacky Warehouse and the father could get on down with the lap dancers.

until you work within these places you wont see it for more than harmless fun…but there is a darker side to the industry which of course everybody turns a blind eye to “as long as it doesn’t effect them”. I dont mind the dancing side of it, just the other rubbish that does go on

John Peasbody and Jase McManlyness.
Have you honestly read what you have written here??
two thing…
1. So you are men complaining about a lapdacing club … how odd!!
2. You are objecting to a lapdancing club yet will applaud it if they accommodate for children… so you think invited children to these places is a good idea… I think questions need to be asked here!!!

Mr Peasbody wheres the equality? Can I not send my husband to the shops whilst I admire the views??
Mr Davies do you not think that Mr McManlyness’s comments were tongue in cheek, and that Mr Peasbody has responded with sarcasm?

Children are the key to the future – if these community facilities are going to be available, it is essential to accomodate children.

Will the girl in the picture be working there?

Shrewsbury has a certain charm, an olde world quaint charm; it is that charm which is the essential selling point of the town, a charm which attracts tourists and the large numbers of families boosting local economy.
This club is a precedent being set, and from here on in more facilities of a similar nature will find it increasingly easier to set up, hence marring the essence of what Shrewsbury represents. I think it is terribly amusing that they describe it as an “upmarket gentleman’s club”, it will be mostly the highly inebriated everyman that trawl the pubs and clubs making fools of themselves of an evening. They make a big enough nuisance of themselves as it is, you can just imagine what kind of idiocy will be bouncing around when they are further excited.
It’s a mistake that will have repercussions for Shrewsbury’s current enviable reputation.

Nic
Your description of the drunks – does certainly give Shrewsbury a certain charm. You describe these people as fools and a nuisance and this is currently attracting the tourists?
It sounds to me like the club can only help.

I didn’t relate drunkenness to tourism. Tourists to Shrewsbury tend not to be the kind to roll out of clubs at closing time.
Its very existence is the issue for the type of tourist who visits Shrewsbury. Quaint cobbled streets, an irregularly high number of period buildings, seeped in history, surrounded by outstanding rural beauty… and strippers. That’s not a caption for the marketing campaign.
The issue of over excited intoxicated is one for the residents of the town centre and the main thoroughfares out of town and those who manage to get through an evening socialising without starting fights, yelling all the way up the road, or find fun in sticking lit objects through letter boxes.
It’s going to be that 18-25 demographic most into the service, they are also the most volatile revellers.

Perhaps a better caption would be come and visit our brothels and massage parlours.

Get a grip, Shrewsbury. My wife an I (early 30′s)enjoy a drink in such entertaining company. As long as the club can keep up a good image and not become a festering pit for the ‘raincoat brigade’ it will add to Shrewsbury’s repetoire of entertainment. And a point that is ‘oft mentioned and never heard, If you dont like it, DONT GO ! Get a life and get on with it. On the Church point. C of E owns almost every square inch of SOHO. True ‘pimpin !

Please Please PLEASE don’t open such a club in Shrewsbury. It’d bring the tone of the place down. Anyway, it’s an expensive taxi fare. Open it in Telford, and I’ll be able to visit it every night.

i work in one of these clubs and i can confirm then men will spend a grand on dance tokens before they walk through the door and don’t stop spending all night, highly sucessful business men, these men go to these clubs to avoid the riff raff of society and settle into the VIP. also 80% of lapdancers are students i’ve met people doing medicine and law degrees and i am doing a psychology degree myself. If this sort of club is going to effect children then their parents need to be investigated if their children are outside on their own between the hours of 9pm and 6am as this is very dangerous under any circumstances.I can’t see any harm the club will cause if it is run well. Anyone complaining should wake up, pleanty of tourist attractions have these clubs even the old ‘seeped in history’ cities ie cambridge have not seen a fall in tourism due to the opening of such a club. When you look to visit another city for a family holiday do you check for lapdancing clubs in case you take the kids out for the night?!
