Robina’s keen to be a Castaway
Monday 16th April 2007, 11:51AM BST.
A Shrewsbury girl could be flying across the world to an isolated island to become a star in the hit BBC programme Castaway.
The programme, which launched the career of presenter Ben Fogle back in 2000, is looking for another person to join the current group on the Great Barrier Island in New Zealand.
Robina Hooper, the daughter of Robin Hooper, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council chief executive, has made it to the final four contestants and votes will be cast by the public to see if she is the one to make it to the island.
Presented by Danny Wallace, the show throws together a group of castaways, who explore the best ways to live in close quarters with strangers.
Yesterday, Robina, a job trainer for Mencap, was on BBC3 with Richard Bacon to sell herself to the public. And on Sunday she will go back to London for the results of the voting. If she wins, she will jet off to New Zealand a week today.
On the BBC website, Robina said: “I would totally love the whole experience, whether it was good or bad.”
Robina, of Wenlock Road, said she wants to shake the other Castaways up, stop them dithering and kick them into action.
The 22-year-old said: “I admire the bounce backness that some people have. I work with people who have reached rock bottom and somehow they’ve managed to scrape themselves back up and just got on with it. That’s an amazing thing for someone to have to do.”
