Rail station parking uproar
Monday 16th April 2007, 1:57PM BST.
The car park outside Shrewsbury Railway Station has lost almost all its standard parking spaces, it was revealed today.
The spaces have been converted into disabled parking bays – leaving a sea of empty spaces in the centre of the car park.
The alterations, carried out last week, mean there are now only two standard spaces outside the station.
Rail bosses say the changes have been made to ensure “industry guidelines” are met. But rail enthusiasts group Shrewsbury Railway Society claims the move is a complete overkill.

What are people supposed to do when they have to meet people from trains in Shrewsbury if all the spaces apart from 2 are disabled spaces? Waiting for trains has been a nightmare for me for nearly 30 years and this new idea will make it near impossible! What a ridiculous idea this is. Political correctness gone mad!

Use Telford Central instead: excellent parking facilities, public transport links and a taxi rank. Shrewsbury is a medieval town with medieval facilities.

Do as i do and use the car. I simply refuse to put any hard earned cash into the Rail networks coffers.

With the introduction of parking restrictions in the Castle Gates and Coton Hill areas of town, and the withdrawal of these spaces, it’s interesting to note that Arriva Trains Wales and NCP have increased the price of the Station Car Park on Howard Street since the beginning of April. Commuters like myself have had to endure a monthly season ticket price increase of over 100%.

Bearing in mind how often the trains are late coming into Shrewsbury, you would think they would increase the number of spaces…not decrease them. How are people meant to pick up users of trains?

It seems a little discrimination against the able bodied of us amongst society is prevalent here!
What sheer stupidity!

Telford does have better public transport links and a better car park but that’s as far as it goes. There’s no decent cafe, just a small cabin like creation that has a very limited choice of food / drink / reading. There are no toilets on platform 2 (which is very troublesome to get to if you are disabled) and the small indoor waiting facility is usually closed by 7pm. There are limited seating facicities on both platforms. For a relatively new station it’s been terribly designed.

This is a clear example of the public sector not having any commercial common sense. Trains are so often late, when I have to drive 15 miles to collect someone I have yet to arrive to find the train is on time. I will boycott Shrewsbury station and use Telford in future. It was bad enough to lose the direct route to London, Shrewsbury appears to be self selecting itself for closure, then perhaps they will learn what commercial commonsense is too late.

someone has got some neck calling that carpark, might as well get rid altogether.

Carolyn, check your facts first- the train system(?) is not in the public sector, I bet you vote Conservative.

How are we supposed to pick up elderly and infirm visitors from the station? Or carry their bags into the station? We cannot use the parking bays. Equally I have to see people with learning difficulties onto the train. The previous arrangement allowed 20 mins to do this on busy days where in town parking is difficult. No longer possible!
No thought was given to the needs of their vunerable customers and their carers

In reply to John Peasbodys comments , Shrewsbury may be medieval but it has alot more to offer than awful Telford!!!

So when my elderly father (neither him or me are disabled)comes to meet me from the station where is he to park his car while he waits for my train to arrive. This is a stupid situation to be in and it will lose the railways more passengers, causing increased prices and more crowded trains for the passengers who are left.

I collect someone from the station nearly every day and this is absolutley ridiculous. Many days it is gridlocked while you wait for trains to arrive there is nowhere else nearby you can park. So now its ok because if you are registered disbled you will have many spaces to choose from however everyone else will have to drive round in circles polluting the air until the person they are waiting for arrives. I do not believe that the guidlines state that such a high percentage of the spaces have to be for the disabled. I think people will start using Telford station more which will cause more traffic on the roads and end up in Shrewsbury station closing……. maybe this is what they are hoping for!!!!!!!

it would be very interesting to see the statistics for disabled users getting on the trains at shrewsbury, do the stats justify this number of spaces. also would be good to see if disabled user numbers significantly increases following a guy with a yellow paint pot going on a power trip in the car park? did the disabled train users of shrews even want this to happen??? the people that are involved in the running of shrewsbury get more and more mental by the day!!!

I found these following recommendations from Dept. Transport
Designated parking spaces in car parks must conform to the following:
1.fewer than 20 spaces,a minimum of one designated space.
2.20 to 60 spaces,a minimum of two designated spaces.
3.61 to 200 spaces,6%of capacity, but must have a minimum of three designated spaces.
4.over 200 spaces,4%of capacity,plus an additional four designated spaces.
5.500 or more spaces,24 designated spaces.
Operators must monitor usage, providing more spaces if they are full more than 10% of car parking hours.Consideration must be given to disabled passengers being able to park near the station entrance, even if this is in short-stay car parks(an extended time should be allowed in these in instances-up to a day).It is recommended that where designated spaces are in blocks, these should number no more than ten. This will discourage abuse.
I know there are now only two standard parking spaces, but how many disabled parking spaces are there now?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t shrewsbury station already have some disabled parking? Why did they feel the need to add a load more stalls ans turn the whole car park into one big disabled space?
The way to challenge this is judicial review, quoting the dept transport guidelines.

Absolutely ridiculous, and done with no consultation.
New provision for pick-up/dropping off is woefully inadequate.
Arriva is clearly nuts.

While I agree there should be disabled parking – it’s got to the point of over kill.
I visited Cambridge recently and the whole of the bottom story was disabled only ( except a small handfull of spaces for mums and tots parking ).
The whole car park was full to bursting – except of course the 60 disabled spaces which had just one car in them!
