Travellers move on from site

Friday 13th April 2007, 1:02PM BST.

Travellers in a field at the junction of the A49 and the B5062A group of travellers which set up camp on the outskirts of Shrewsbury after settling on a school field has moved on.

Residents were outraged when the travellers gathered on land at Meole Brace School and Science College last week.

They moved on to a private site at Yeomanry Road on Battlefield Enterprise Park and land at the junction of the A49 and B5062, on the east of the town.

But the group has now moved on after being visited by Shropshire County Council’s gipsy liaison officer.

Dawn Peel, assistant gipsy liaison officer, said: “We have visited them and we explained to them that they needed to move on as soon as possible.

“My colleague went out initially and they said they would be stopping for about a week.

“They said they were just getting together for Easter and I gather this is what happens around holiday times.

“It has happened before in other areas of the county. They moved on from the other areas of Shrewsbury and hopefully they will have moved on completely now.”

Borough councillor Kath Owen, who represents Meole Brace, said she had been contacted by many angry residents who were unhappy about the travellers staying on the school field.

She said it was outrageous that taxpayers money would have to be used to clear up any mess left behind.
