Project to stop illegal parking

traffic-warden2.jpgA scheme aimed at tackling illegal parking has proved a success since its launch across Shropshire last November and is generally accepted by the public, claims a new report.

By the end of February £106,220 had been raised in fines by the Park Right service, with £95,130 the result of on-street offences and £11,090 coming from charges imposed for illegal off-street parking.

The scheme started with 16 new traffic wardens patrolling streets and car parks across Shropshire.

By the end of next month the figure will have risen to 22, reveals the report which is being presented next Tuesday to a joint advisory group representing the county and five district councils. The latest intake of wardens being their training on April 30.

But because more people are complying with regulations than was predicted, there will be no further increase in the number of wardens until more experience of providing the service has been gained or the enforcement plan is extended.

The report says: “Implementation of the service has so far been generally successful, with little critical comment, a general acceptance by the public of the necessity of such a role, and in fact some very positive feedback in respect of freeing-up of loading bays and disabled parking areas, and greater ease in finding a legal on-street place.

“Not unexpectedly however the residents of the county have shown a greater compliance with the regulations than was predicted in the feasibility study, so it proposed that the timescale to increase the number of parking attendants to 28 be extended.

“One interesting side-effect has been the greater level of compliance in off-street car parks than previously observed, probably due to the higher profile of the uniformed wardens.”
