A collection of striking photographs show the dramatic effects of diverting a busy road through a quiet Shropshire village (Click on the numbers to see the pictures).
Rachel Graves, 22, a second-year student at Nottingham Trent University, took the pictures in Whittington recently when the Mile End Roundabout was closed for roadworks.
She said: “I am from the Oswestry area originally and often return to the area to visit family during holiday times.
“I was recently back in Oswestry during the week that the Mile End Roundabout was closed for roadworks, causing a great deal of controversy and inconvenience for drivers all around the area.”
The roundabout was closed for eight nights from March 26.
The closure was in order to build new approach roads and put in anti-skid surfacing.
She added: “The closure happened after 8pm each day and a large volume of the traffic, primarily lorries and other heavy good vehicles, that would normally use that route were diverted through the village of Whittington.
“During my time there I took a number of long exposures on a 5×4 field camera to capture the effect this had on the village, which is usually very tranquil in the evening.
“I stood outside for half an hour to catch the lorries and cars going past and chose sections of the village that gave a good idea of the surrounding area and road.”
She added: “It could be something I use for my course but I’m not sure at the moment.
“I just like taking photographs, any excuse really.”

What exciting pictures. Hopefully the tourists will be flooding in the Whittington now to boost the economy!

I live on College road and a lot more traffic came down my road at that time but you don’t see that in the paper, just POOR old Whittington. Thay weren’t the only place to suffer.

Hello Donna
Perhaps if you’d taken some wonderful photographs, your road might have got in the Star.
