Plans to transform a former supermarket in the town into a JD Wetherspoon pub look set to be approved this week by the district council.

The pub giant bought the former Kwik Save site, on Queen Street, for an undisclosed sum earlier this year and the new development will bring 40 new jobs to the town.

Today, North Shropshire District Council spokeswoman Rian Bentley said there had been no objections or representations over the site so a decision looked likely to be made by a council officer in the next few days.

JD Wetherspoon, which has venues across Shropshire including at Whitchurch, said it had bought the site to help develop the chain in the county.

The supermarket shut last March with the loss of 11 jobs.

Mrs Bentley said: “It looks like a decision will be made in the next few days by delegated decision and there have been no representations from the adjoining properties.

“There is a kitchen area, dance floor, toilets and bar area included in the plans.”

Market Drayton town Councillor Roger Hughes, chairman of the authority’s planning committee, said they had previously looked at the plans and had no objections to the development.

However, he said they had asked for a financial contribution by the pub towards CCTV.

JD Wetherspoon spokesman, Eddie Gershon confirmed the company was looking at a development cost of around £1 million.
