With five games to go – including three at Gay Meadow – Shrewbury’s play-off fate lies firmly in their own hands.

But the chasing pack are closing in and, while Peters was delighted with his side’s Bank Holiday 2-1 victory, he has also set about preventing any complacency creeping into a buoyant camp.

“We have not achieved anything yet,” declared the Town boss. “All we have done is come through a very hard part of the season with four games in nine days and given ourselves a chance. But the work is not done – it only starts now.

“We are not taking anything for granted. I still think that Lincoln are catchable by a few teams so there are eight sides battling for three places in the play-offs.

“It’s in our hands which is great – but we have got five tough games left and still got it all to do.”

Despite his words of caution, Peters was delighted with his side’s response to being comprehensively out-played in the opening period yesterday, goals from Derek Asamoah and Neil Ashton helping to register three vital points.

“We couldn’t do anything in the first half and I said to the players at half-time that none of them deserved to be going back out,” he added.

“I would have made 11 changes if I could and I didn’t say anything for a minute or two in the dressing room at half-time because I was trying to think of something positive to say.

“The only thing I could come up with was that we were only one goal down – but that was vital because I fancied us strongly to come back from that. I didn’t pick on any individuals. We were bad as a team and needed to get better as a team.

“It was probably one of the most enjoyable results of the season because of the way we did it.

“I’m a big one for quotes and Vince Lombardi said a man’s finest hour is when he is lying exhausted having given everything to get a victory – and that’s what we did yesterday.

“The players have had a busy spell so they will be given a few days off now.”
