Fans queue for finale tickets
Tuesday 10th April 2007, 10:11AM BST.
Thousands of eager Shrewsbury Town fans queued around Gay Meadow for up to two hours to buy tickets for what could be the last ever game to be played at the ground.
Supporters began lining up yesterday at around 4pm to secure their place on the terraces for the match against Grimsby Town on May 5.
Tickets went on sale to the public following yesterday’s victory against Milton Keynes Dons, which leaves Town sitting in a play-off position.
A line of fans stretched all the way back to the Wakeman School within minutes of the final whistle being blown.
Tickets for the Grimsby game have already been available to priority card holders, Super Blues members and disabled supporters.
But home fans have now been allocated an extra 1,500 standing places in the Station End, traditionally reserved for away supporters, after the away club agreed to take only its seated allocation.
Many Shrewsbury Town supporters were queuing until around 7pm to get their hands on tickets, while phone lines were red hot this morning with inquiries from fans.
A club spokesman said there were still tickets available although staff were working flat out to sell those still left.
Town Secretary John Howarth said arrangements for the club’s last ever league game at Gay Meadow were close to completion.
Many former players will join in with the celebrations to mark the club’s farewell to the current ground before starting next season at the New Meadow.
