Illegal waste carriers face fines
Tuesday 3rd April 2007, 5:34AM BST.
Businesses in Mid Wales found illegally carrying waste could face fines under new powers.
Firms in both Wales and England must, by law, be registered with the agency to transport waste, but Environment Agency Wales officials have claimed some companies have avoided doing this.
They said the agency was implementing powers to issue fixed penalty notices – with fines of up to £300 – to catch the offenders – preventing fly-tipping and illegal dumping.
Penalties may now be issued for offences including failure to provide evidence of being a registered waste carrier, failing to comply with laws on the duty of care, and for some offences relating to managing hazardous wastes.
These are set out in the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, and the Hazardous Waste regulations.
Mary Youell, the agency’s strategic environment planning manager for waste, said she wanted businesses to comply with the law.
She said:”Everyone has a duty to make sure their waste is disposed of legally, yet some people think they can get away with using rogue traders. We want to encourage businesses to comply with the law and stamp out the illegal businesses, so the only ones left are those that care about our environment.”
Firms can register as a waste carrier or broker by calling 08708 506506.
