Faye: ‘Blair has sacrificed me’
Friday 30th March 2007, 11:50AM BST.
A third letter allegedly written by Shropshire sailor Faye Turney in which she says she has been “sacrificed” to the policies of the British and US governments was this afternoon released by Iran.
The letter, released through the Iranian Embassy in London, called for forces to be removed from Iraq.
In it she said: “It is now our time to ask our government to make a change to its oppressive behaviour towards other people.”
The letter began: “I am writing to you as a British serviceperson who has been sent to Iraq, sacrificed due to the intervening policies of the Bush and Blair governments.”
It later added: “Whereas we hear and see on the news the way that prisoners were treated in Abu Ghrayb and other Iraqi jails by the British and American personnel, I have received total respect and faced no harm.”
The letter was released shortly after Prime Minister Tony Blair denounced Iran’s treatment of Mrs Turney and 14 servicemen, seized a week ago.
Earlier today Mrs Turney, from Shrewsbury, was shown on television alongside two male colleagues one of whom “confessed” to entering Iran’s waters.
Nathan Summers was reported to have said that he wanted to “apologise” to the Iranian people.
Iranian television has already screened footage of Mrs Turney “admitting” that the party of 15 Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines were in Iranian waters when they were seized by Republican Guards a week ago.
Earlier today Chancellor Gordon Brown described the treatment of the mother of one as “cruel, callous, inhuman and unacceptable”.
And asked during a visit to Manchester about the parading of the sailors and Marines, Mr Blair said: “I really don’t know why the Iranian regime keeps doing this. All it does is enhance people’s sense of disgust captured personnel being paraded and manipulated in this way doesn’t fool anyone.”
In response to criticism over Britain’s “softly, softly” approach, Mr Blair replied that the most important thing was to make sure all 15 sailors and marines were freed safe.
The Government has already responded furiously to Iran’s release last night of a second letter said to have been written by Mrs Turney the only woman in the party.
The hand-written note addressed to British “representatives” and apparently signed by the 26-year-old questioned why UK troops have not been withdrawn from Iraq.
The stilted language used in the letter prompted fears that she had written it under duress.
Mrs Turney apparently wrote that she was being well looked after and said the Iranian people are “kind, considerate, warm, compassionate and very hospitable”.
It added: “Isn’t it time for us to start withdrawing our forces from Iraq and let them determine their own future?”
Last night, the Iranian government sent a formal note to the British Embassy, although the Foreign Office has refused to reveal its contents.
A spokeswoman said the message was being given “serious consideration”.
There had been fresh hope that Mrs Turney could be freed following a phone call between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

We should not be surprised at what this young lady say’s or does and no matter what – she can be totally forgiven for saying anything that will make her time easier whilst in captivity. What she says, says more about her captors than about her. The latest letter just shows the cowardly depths that these uncivilised thugs will go to. Their childish antics display all the hallmarks of a depraved society that takes no shame in coercing a young servicewoman under their control. Say all you want to Faye, we know you dont believe it and it is done to pacify an insane and politically and socially derelict absurdity in the shape of Iran. Our thoughts are with you and your colleagues, all of you, say whatever you like and come home soon.
