District scheme given a revamp

Tuesday 27th March 2007, 4:55AM BST.

North Shropshire’s revamped registration services have been launched in Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Wem.

The new office in The Talbot Centre on Whitchurch Business Park opened for business at noon.

The office was opened to cope with rising demand and has improved parking, better IT connections and full disabled access.

Extended opening hours have also been introduced in district offices from today.

Karen Burton, Shropshire County Council’s registration service business manager, said: “The new office should bring about quite a big improvement to the services being provided.

“The new facilities in Whitchurch are very good and the IT connections are much improved. There was an issue with parking in Whitchurch town centre, but that has now been resolved thanks to the move.

“Both Whitchurch and Market Drayton are busy offices so we have also decided to extend the opening hours.”

As well as saying goodbye to the old office in St Mary’s Street, the service has said a fond farewell to two of its longest serving officers.

June Pearce, registrar for Whitchurch for 33 years, and Jane Lloyd, registrar at Market Drayton for 21 years, retired this month.

New opening hours are now in place at the Whitchurch office, as well as at the registration service points in Cheshire Street, Market Drayton, and at Edinburgh House, Wem.
