How to avoid parking fines

Thursday 22nd March 2007, 12:02PM GMT.

How they must be gloating over the £107,000 collected in Shropshire for parking and overstaying in council car parks.

Since the end of November, Shrewsbury alone has collected £60,390 from on-street parking fines, £27,330 more than all the other districts put together.

The motorist is blamed for the ills of the world but, if you want to raise some money, clip the motorist with 2p on the petrol, £10 on the licence etc.

The council will spend thousands on consultants initiating studies on inner-town congestion charges to make some more cash out of the motorist, no doubt. Surely all these parking fines must indicate that there is something amiss with parking facilities in the town?

A feasibility study on improving car parking to the benefit of the high street’s highly taxed businesses and shops would be far more appropriate.

I seldom patronise the town these days, preferring ‘out of town’ with its excellent handy and free parking.

In my town the Downtown Core was Dying ……… And then some right thinking Town Councillor came up with a “No Brainer” …… “Elimnate Parking Fee’s Downtown” ……. Result ….. Downtown Core is up and Thriving………. Go Figure!……..

As a conscientious motorist who always takes care to park legally, I am overjoyed that the inconsiderate drivers who block the towns roads by parking wherever they please, are now getting hit financially for their selfish actions.
Double the fines and then double them again. Oh and how about 3 points on their licence too. Surely parking in a dangerous place in town is more likely to cause an accident to pedestrians than exceeding the speed limit on a motorway!

I agree entirely with the last post – I am a town centre resident and I have been waiting for 5 years for this initiative to be implemented and I am glad that selfish parkers are being penalised!
