What does MP really believe?
Tuesday 20th March 2007, 1:17PM GMT.
I read with interest the report in the Shropshire Star, March 3, on the congestion charging debate held in Parliament on March 2.
Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski set out his case to the Transport Minister why any plans for a charging pilot in Shrewsbury should be rejected. Daniel Kawczynski is reported as saying “There is no congestion in Shrewsbury.”
Pardon me for asking but if “there is no congestion in Shrewsbury”, why do we need to spend £70 million on building the North West Relief Road?
A few short weeks ago our MP came out (Shropshire Star February 2) as a “huge supporter” of the road. Now he is saying the main justification for building it, congestion in Shrewsbury, does not exist.
I would be very grateful if any local residents could help me to understand this glaring inconsistency. This is not the first time Daniel Kawczynski has shifted his position on this issue.
The Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth newsletter for May 2006 carries a report of a meeting in February 2006. Daniel Kawczynski said at the meeting that he “does not support the North West Relief Road and would rather see the money spent elsewhere”.
So in February 2006 he was against the road, in February 2007 he was a huge supporter of the road, and in March 2007 he said the main reason for building it did not exist.
Could our MP please tell us which one of these positions he currently believes to be correct, if any?

If this road is being built, why have congestion charges, I think that is what Daniel is saying.
Or are congestion charges going to claw back some or all of the £70million at the risk of loss of trade to local ecenomy.

The words: “I read with interest” usually means that the “reader” has no interest in what he read, and will rant on for several paragraphs about what he thought the person might have meant.
