Region will feel chill in icy spell

Monday 19th March 2007, 10:18AM GMT.

Shropshire and Mid Wales was today bracing itself for a cold snap as scattered snow showers blanketed the region.

Snow fell in most areas last night and although little of it settled, residents in parts of south Shropshire woke to winter wonderland scenes.

Star weatherman John Warner said temperatures could fall as low as -4C (25F) or -5C (23F) tomorrow night and added roads could be icy.

Last night temperatures fell to -2C (28F) as the county battled with a strong northerly wind.

In Shrewsbury, firefighters were called to Marks & Spencer in Castle Street on Sunday at 7.50am to inspect a storm-damaged sign. Panels were flapping lose in the wind and 5m of metal sheeting had to be removed.

In south Shropshire, there was snow on high ground while villages and towns like Church Stretton, Clun, Bishop’s Castle and Cleobury Mortimer had several inches.
