When small is best

James ShawIt seems that once I’ve finally got my head around the technological side of being a video journalist, something else has reared its head. How on earth do you decide what to film?

One of the problems with Shropshire is that it has so much going on in one go.

A case in point is the last few weeks. Quite apart from the usual videos about the farmers’ market in Shrewsbury and the Big Ballet in Oakengates – not to mention Shrewsbury Town’s pitch inspection – we’ve had to miss point-to-point racing at Eyton, Motocross at Hawkstone, a steam gala at Bridgnorth and even a ploughing match near Much Wenlock.

That’s not even to mention the events at various theatres in Shrewsbury.

Of course, all these events deserve full coverage as we look to cover the whole range of Shropshire’s ins, outs, and the squidy bits in-between. Even the antics of Comic Relief today may have to fall by the wayside as we look to finally edit the videos we already have in the can.

All this shows is that even if we had a whole firm of video journalists running around the county, we still wouldn’t be able to cover everything that we wanted to.

What it does mean is that with little old me covering events, I can just bring you the very best of what Shropshire is all about on a regular basis – and all with the kind of personal touch that goes with a small project.

This personal touch means that I refuse to put my name to a video that I don’t think it as good as it could be. And you’ll see that with every video journalist that works for the Star – I like to think that the quality of the films is paramount.

Sometimes, small really does mean best.
