Peters blasts penalty plan

Gary PetersFootball League proposals to introduce penalty shoot-outs at the end of drawn matches have been slammed as “razzmatazz” by Shrewsbury manager Gary Peters.Football League clubs have agreed to consider the revolutionary proposal as part of a wider review aimed at making the game more entertaining.

Winners of the penalty shoot-out would earn two points, with the losers getting one for the draw.

A meeting of the 72 League clubs at Walsall yesterday agreed to a working party being set up to consider the proposal.

But Peters believes the idea isn’t the way forward.

“It’s more messing about,” said the Town boss. “If you go away from home and work hard for a draw, you could still be disappointed if you lose the penalties and only come away with a point.

“It’s razzmatazz and I’m not sure it would lead to more attacking football. Some teams would get near the end of the game and shut up shop and take their chances with the penalties.

“At the moment there is a big difference between one point and three points and that encourages teams to go for the win. I don’t want someone to get two points for a draw. It’s more meddling with the game.”

Town were represented at the meeting by club secretary John Howarth who added: “They are trying to refresh the product and some voices were in favour and some were against.”
