Town may get student centre

A cycle path and study centre could be created in Broseley as part of £20 million plans to rebuild a Shropshire school.

William Brookes School, in Much Wenlock, has been made a “pathfinder” school under a Government programme.

Shropshire County Council, which approved the plans, has been looking at the options open to the project, and the part Broseley could play in the scheme.

Norrie Porter, county council head of premises and planning, said: “Over the next ten weeks we will be working with the consultants to develop a vision for the school. One area we have been looking at is sustainable travel and a cycle path between Broseley and Much Wenlock is a possibility.

“It could turn out that we can’t get funding for it or it might be that the gradients would be too steep, but we will look into it.”

Mr Porter said another option being discussed was the creation of a study centre in Broseley for sixth form pupils.

He said: “There is a possibility of having a study centre in Broseley so the older students would not have to travel in every day. It is very much in the air but it might be that some classes are held in the centre.”

Broseley councillors have welcomed the ideas.

Councillor Eric Cox said: “Around 40 per cent of the children that go to William Brookes School come from Broseley so it would make sense.” The new school is due to open in 2009.
